I found it quite a pleasant place to visit, with daily local joys such as eating pupusas (0.50 – 0.75 USD per piece) and hopping on the chicken buses, which connect every corner of the country for around a dollar. Highlights include Joya de Ceren and the El Rosario Church in San Salvador.
